Early the next day we embarked on our trip to the infamous Golden Triangle. Each of us had to pay 1350Baht (inclusive of lunch) for the whole day trip.
I guess everyone that comes to Chiangmai had to go to the triangle, seeing that it's so near. There were 7 of us in our group, 2 american sisters, a british couple and us.
Luckily there weren't to many in our group as it would slow down our trip. Our ride was a van and it was quite pleasant.
Note the line in dark blue. We departed Chiangmai about 8.00am and after about 3hrs later we arrived at Chiang Rai, another small town along the way. (Refer to map)
We were all fast asleep when the van finally jerked to a stop. We had arrived at the Hot Spring, which was part of itinery.
The toilets here costs 3Baht to enter, overpriced for such a remote location. The landscape here was quite nice with the shops on 2 sides and the hot springs in the middle.
Initially I thought that we'd get to soak in the hot springs but that notion was quickly thrown out of the window when I saw this....
They're cooking eggs in the hot spring! I wouldn't want to enter the hot spring and come out cooked. The red shirt guy is a malaysian malay. The place is swamped with them, so strange to hear the familiar malay sound in a foreign land.
The guy said it takes about 8-10 mins to boil the egg. And they actually eat the egg after cooking it .... Ewww talk about dirty man. Yucks! *puke*
It felt quite warm just standing near to it.
Ahmad is a fantasy pet name I gave to him. All drivers in my world are called Ahmad. ;p
After the brief sight-seeing, we walked around the shops for some window shopping. Just the usual tourist shops selling souvenirs and stuff.
The bottles here only contained herbs for the wine, nothing near as exotic as what we'd try later in the day.
The most famous of all has to be the Karen Long Neck, or known locally as the Padong Tribe. I doubt that anyone hasn't seen their photographs with their brass rings on their necks before.
We got some tidbits to munch along the way as our guide told us it'll take another 1hr + to reach Chiang Saen, where the Golden Triangle is located.
Along the way, our guide touched a bit on the local areas and some history. But his inexperience showed when he wasn't able to answer some of our questions. "I'll check and get back to you", he says. ;o) Till today I'im still waiting.
Well at least he speaks an acceptable level of english.
